The Planning

Client wanted a pool that would be entertaining for their large family. When I came up with the concept of a diving platform, the client took the idea to a whole new level – literally! When we were in discussions on the height of the platform, he insisted, with tape measure in hand, from the top of his staircase inside the home that he wanted it 9ʼ tall.

The Design

While the client wanted his diving platform 9 feet tall, his wife thought it was too high. So we added another diving platform at 4-1/2 feet. The grade in the backyard slopes dramatically toward the home. To create a pool in the location where the client wanted it required a way to keep the water away from the house and pool. The solution – create a dry stream bed between the house and pool that would channel water during locally heavy rains. Dealing with existing grade, we chose to cut into the hill exposing a 12ʼ high x 60ʼ wide waterfall with two diving platforms through the multiple falls. The pool is 12 feet deep to 3 feet in the shallow end. This pool has the best of both worlds, with stone laid zero entry to a large 3ʼ shallow area that slopes to a massive deep end below the falls. Custom Color Kinetics lighting were implemented to encompass the pool, spa and waterfall areas.

The Construction

Large retaining walls, some spanning 10ʼ tall, were created out of dry-laid stone retaining multiple level terraces around the pool area. To gain access to diving platforms we created some sort of “tunnel” out of stone walls on either side of the waterfall as leading you to stone steps and the diving platforms. The pathway continues beyond the platform areas to a massive sunken stone bench that seats 50 people surrounding a large fire pit . This fire pit area is truly hidden from 90% of the pool viewing area. Three waterfalls at 800 gallons per minute PER FALL cascade into the deep end of the pool. Two hundred tons of native Oklahoma boulders were used to create the massive waterfalls. Landscaping encompasses the waterfalls to soften the boulders and give privacy to the fire pit area. All pool, waterfall, spa and lighting are controlled by a Jandy Aqualink PDA and Jandy Aqua Link RS OneTouch wireless system.
